This is a picture of a “Shower of God,” so called by our borehole contractor because the water is underground and was put there by God. The shower was created when the diamond-headed drill bored down to an underground stream. The driller then exerts a little more pneumatic pressure and the water stream is forced up to shower all around. Apparently each Charity couple is initiated with a “shower.” The borehole was on the grounds of a primary school, so all of the children were out to welcome John and I when we came to see the “shower.” When the water came out, the children were delighted and ran up to touch it and play in it. It was a very hot day and we were all cooled. It took a lot of scrubbing to get the brown water out of our clothing.

The children thanked us in song. They speak their tribal language at home. When they enter school they learn both Swahili (National language) and English (Official language). As you can imagine, in primary school, the grasp of English is rather tenuous. So one class counted in English, another sang, “Heady, shoulders, knees and toes.” The children are beautiful and very enthusiastic. They are also very curious about the Msungu (white people).
